Fabric has always lured me with its colors and textures. Each piece of fabric is the result of someone’s creative process. It is a pleasure to me that my building blocks of fabric are the fruit of another’s imagination. My work is a process of gathering, tearing or cutting apart and reassembling. In the assembling, I am interested in tension, movement, creating depth and the appearance of light coming from within. The design process starts with gathering fabrics. I pile them and leave them in view till I am certain of them. This can take weeks. In all phases of working I find that leaving the work and returning later gives me a fresh view point. I don’t want to force the outcome as much as discover it. As I piece together the fabrics they are always under my fingertips and in my view. The look of the piece changes with every addition and in every position in which it falls. The texture begins to change with the stitching and layering. No longer falling fluidly, the work gains substance. Recently I have ventured away from the dictates of traditional piecing/quilting for a more aggressive philosophy of “moving forward”. Conventional methods stress technical precision which translates going back, over and over, till the work is technically perfect. I now add to, change direction, sew over, or whatever it takes to go forward, not backward.
