ganges hands
Prayer to the Ganges by Karel K. Hendee
skyportrait
Karel & Jonathan on recent tour
" Prayer to the Ganges" is part of my series of hand-painted silk art quilts dedicated to rivers, this art quilt depicts hands releasing a prayer at sunrise. This practice is done along the shores of the Ganges River in India, where I traveled 6 years ago. Children make the bowls out of leaves that are then pressed into a mold and dried. Then they fill the bowls with rose petals and marigolds and make a small candle. The Ganges River is said to cleanse the soul, and so the ritual of releasing prayers is a beautiful and holy experience. As I work on these river quilts, I contemplate the quality that I learned from each river. The Ganges River symbolizes "Forgiveness" for me, and the blessing of release that follows.
This Fall, my husband Jonathan and I went on our "Great Basin Magical Mystery Tour" where we performed music, developed new art connections, and visited two Wild Women in their homes and studios. Our trip took us through Northern Nevada, into Utah to see the aspens, and back along the "loneliest highway" 50. There is something special about visiting another artists home and seeing where and how they work. I wrote this poem remembering visiting fiber artist Rocky Stone in Cordova, Alaska years ago. The impact of that day remains unforgettable. On this trip, we visited Kristen Frantzen Orr at her home in Spring Creek where she showed me her collection of Italian glass rods and her torch table. Later we visited Susan Church and witnessed her working away with her son on his Knight costume for Halloween, an overdue collaboration between them. Seeing an artist in their home and their landscape gives context and meaning to the art they create. I am grateful for these visits and gateways to other creative realms.
When one hopeful artist visits
The world of another
Two hearts, two minds
Reach out to find the Real
It takes time to see
As Georgia O’Keefe tells us plainly
Shows us gracefully
Invites us to a stillness
While the world keeps spinning under our feet
I can still taste the cappuccino
And hear the hummingbird
Suspended in your window
And dance among the colors and textures
Of your chosen fabric
And look out the window
Where the whales and otters play
The cloth, the hummingbird, and sound of the surf
Entwined, with cappuccino and honeysuckle vine
Stories of yours and stories of mine
It is more than what we do, and what we create
It is a synthesis of heart and soul
Wildness and place
It is living a life from deep inside
A slow way of living
With hearts open wide
Our hands follow the conductor
Our soul, composes the song
And from this living, art is born

News from the Ranch: Passing it On...

Susan
Susan Church
When my two sons were younger I always encouraged them to come to the ranch shop with me and learn a few metal working techniques. Those times usually ended in them just roughhousing and banging hammers on the anvil until I couldn’t stand it any longer and sent them elsewhere. So this year, when my 23-year-old son announced he wanted to make a set of armor to wear on Halloween, my response was dismissive. It would be a way-too-big-of-a-project, especially right before the Wild Women show when I needed to do my own work in the shop. However, his persistence finally softened me. He downloaded photos of his character, Jordah, from the HBO series, The Game of Thrones, and we set about tailoring 16- gauge metal into a size XXX suit of armor.
Andrew
Andrew Church
He was pretty handy with the torch and plasma cutter and got a good biceps workout while pounding out the various metal parts. Fortunately, the Internet provided a source for the chain mail, leather and buckle details. I helped with tailoring, fittings and holding pieces together while he riveted, but for the most part he took the lead and after a couple of weeks he was ready to go to Reno for the Zombie Crawl. It was a nice realization that we could work together; solving problems and having fun as well. He proved to have the patience to see a project through from beginning to end, and together we learned some new skills. If they ever have a Project Runway for costume design, we just might apply. He is now helping me prepare for the Wild Women show and has promised to model the ranch-crafted armor at our opening, November 16. We hope to see you there.

Dick Mackey's Kiln

wood fired tea cups by Dick Mackey

Dick Mackey fires to cone 10/11 and uses a mix of pine, juniper and, mountain mahogany in his single chamber Anagama style kiln. The kiln is about 6 ft. wide and 12 ft. long on the inside. He spent a year studying in Tachikui Japan where they make Tamba pottery and the kiln is a modified version of the kilns they use there.
It takes about 3 days to load the kiln and 2 days to fire, and burns about 3 to 4 cords of wood. He has a crew of about four.

Artists Demonstrations, Tea and Scones

We will be serving “TEA & SCONES” at 1p.m. and 3p.m. each day of the Wild Women Show. You are invited to join the artists below in half hour art demonstrations while sipping your favorite tea and tasting delicious scones. Demonstrating artists include: Sidne Teske, Jimmie Benedict, Story Hour with Kathleen Durham, Barbara Glynn Prodaniuk, Pat Wallis, Barb Uriu, and Karel Hendee. And of course Mike the butler and Claudia the maid will serve tea.

Friday November 16 @ 1p.m. & 3 p.m.

Plein Aire demonstration by Sidne Teske at 1 pm Friday, November 16. Weather permitting I will set up my easel outside the Double Diamond room I am located in and will make a small painting, looking into the Arboretum. The colors should be fabulous!

At 3p.m. Jimmie Benedict will be demonstrating her techniques for strip piecing and applique. Her unique blends of color and detail stand out when she cranks her sewing machine in to high gear.

Saturday November 17

Story Hour with Kathleen Durham @ 11 a.m.

It’s been a pretty crazy year in Underwood. As some of you know, Fred Mouse went to Egypt, and on his return continued to try to acquire culture by setting up his own library. This is, of course, in addition to his three-room art gallery! But the rest of Underwood is not worried about culture -- they’re planning on having a circus again. Their last circus was nine years ago, and they have such great plans for the new one. Bigger, better, awe-inspiring! They came across an old horse who had lost his stuffing, his energy, and his dignity. They patched him up and re-stuffed him, and he is ready to do scary trick riding stunts with them. They will have their world-famous ferris wheel and lots of impressive performers doing amazing feats. Well, we’ll see….they set such hare-brained goals and usually it falls to me to help them achieve them. I can tell you that I saw a whole group of mice in clown suits and big clown shoes under my piano. They looked like they were just fooling around with a golf ball, but who knows? Maybe they were rehearsing an exciting circus act? I hope you’ll all come see them in November. Kathleen

Saturday November 17 @ 1p.m. & 3p.m.

Get your "Wild" on handbuilding birds with Barbara Glynn Prodaniuk@ 1p.m.Saturday in the atrium.

Saturday at 3 PM Pat Wallis will be demonstrating oil painting on an acid etched piece of copper. This is a 2 step process. The acid is applied and allowed to dry for 2 days. The acid is then sealed and oil paints are applied. The first step will be finished when I demo the oil painting and final step.

Join Barbara Uriu at 1p.m. in the Double Diamond room for "Its all about the stones". Barbara Uriu specializes in creating hand fabricated gold and sterling one-of-a-kind jewelry. What makes her work unique are the variety of stones that she uses from fossil bamboo and fossil stalactite to meteorites and mother-of-pearl antique Chinese gaming chips. Pictured is a 14kt gold pendant made with an antique gaming chip and 3 tourmalines. The piece fits into a mahogany wooden vessel fashioned by wood turner Joe Donohue. Antique gaming chips were carved and engraved by the Chinese out of mother-of-pearl during the Ching Dynasty from 1730 – 1870 for British royalty and nobility. Come to her demo to view some unusual gem specimens, from outer space to deep within the earth.

Join art quilter Karel Hendee at 3p.m. in Davids Room as she demonstrates how she layers her hand-dyed silks and other fabrics and fibers into a collage and quilts them together using various decorative threads and creative stitching.

Susan Church notes from the ranch

bent gate for starters

ready for assembly

finished

The space where I create my artwork also doubles as our ranch shop, where oftentimes machinery repairs take precedence over sculpting. This is especially true during the summer haying season, and this year was no different. The buckrake (a homemade tractor/assemblage that carries bales to the stack yard) had a break in the front suspension. Testing my overhead welding skills while squeezed under the chassis, I managed to patch the leaf spring bracket back together for hopefully another year. And, seeing as how the machine was in the shop anyway, it got a good going over -mending cracks and fractures throughout the frame. Old equipment tells many a tale in the welds and patches they carry. A form of art in itself.

Now that haying is behind us and the cattle are shipped to market, I am left with more time to work in the studio/shop. The days have grown cooler and quieter (the garden froze weeks ago and the crew is mostly out rounding up cattle ) and I am able to pick through my collections of rusted metal objects for inspiration. Antique and discarded farm implements are repurposed and become the focal point of many of my pieces. It is magic as a newly discovered gear, rake tooth, or coiled spring finds its way into a past project that was lacking that certain element. With the November Wild Women show just around the corner it is an especially creative time. I have multiple pieces currently in the line up on my work bench and it is always interesting to see which ones make the show. The anticipation of bringing my new work “to town” is exciting. I always look forward to seeing friends, family and collectors and getting your feedback. Mark your calendars for our opening at Rancho San Rafael on Friday, November 16 or Saturday and Sunday November 17 and 18. Some surprises are for certain!

A sample of what "Beyond Wild " means to some of us follows.

Barbara Uriu

For the past six years I’ve had the pleasure of knowing local woodturning artist Joe Donohue. Joe specializes in taking distressed wood and literally turning them into art objects.
A few years ago Joe and I embarked on a collaboration which we call “Jewelry For The Home”. Joe fashions a beautiful wooden vessel topped with a fitted lid. My contribution is a finial that fits into the lid but can also be removed to be worn as a pendant. Both the wooden vessel and pendant are works of art by themselves and together, they represent nature at its best.
This year, Joe’s vessels are smaller and measure less than 6 inches tall. My stone pendants, in contrast are about 3 inches long. This is a new direction for us and the look is totally different from our previous work.

Pictured is one of my pendants that will serve as a finial for a wooden vessel. The stones are a red garnet and a fossil stalactite in sterling silver. I will have this pendant in its vessel plus several new pieces of “Jewelry For The Home” at our November show.

Karel Hendee

The end of summer is always a complex time of trying to squeeze in the last few weeks of summer fun, stocking up food from the garden, and trying to be as productive as I can for the busy Fall season of shows. When the goldenrod blooms, I know it's time to slow down and savor the sweet things in life like vine ripened tomatoes, picking blackberries at dusk, and the last few swims in the river before it gets too cold. Rivers have always been a place of refuge and a sanctuary of peace and inspiration for me, and so I have decided to embark on a series dedicated to the amazing rivers I have loved and lived near. These include the Willamette River of Oregon, the Copper River of Alaska, the Mississippi River of Minnesota, and now the beautiful Yuba River of Northern California. I have decided to meditate on the quality and lessons I have learned from each river at the different times and stages in my life. These qualities include surrender, playfulness, resilience, and generosity. From here, I guess I'll just go with the flow and see where it leads me.

Jimmie Benedict

Beyond Wild…..and Beyond Wild Women
In 1969, when I started my adventure with fibers, life was limitless. I could build giant sculptures from a simple cord. I could leap color challenges in a single bound. I saw no limit in what I could do. I could work in small increments of time and convince a 6 year old that he could weave a belt on an inkle loom. Actually, I think he would have rather had some cool game that year for Christmas….but I think he/they gained from having a mom like me and maybe even an inkle loom. You should see what they are doing now.

I have been enriched by the people who I have met over those many years that have enjoyed what I have done. I influenced what they put in their homes or wore….they influenced my choices of color or pattern. My customers have been great joys in my life. When I would see a piece of fabric, I would know that it was something that would be great for Aggie or for Kay. I owe so much to the people that have cared for my work over the years and have been my inspiration. I thank you for all your support and love.

Can you see where I am headed with this? It is time to move on. My darling husband, Ron, has retired and we want to do some things that there hasn’t been time for. And we want to do them while we are still capable. That is what this photo is about. I love to ride my bike and enjoy the out of doors. I am trying to improve the way I play the banjo. I will still sew and explore the techniques that interest me, but I want to do them in a way that inspires me without the pressure of filling an inventory for a show. So…this is my last Wild Women show. That is a really hard thing to say, but it is time. I have loved helping to grow this group of women artists. It has been an important part of my artistic life. I hope to remain on the edges and to enjoy the ways that the Wild Women continue to evolve.
And this year, I am working on some cool stuff. There will be color. There will be detail. There will be joy. I want this to be a nice collection of wonderful things to wear that you will enjoy. I want to move along on a high note.

Kristen Frantzen Orr

For who people collect and display handmade beads as small art objects, I'll be including a few loose beads in the gallery portion of the Reno show, Sept. 6 - Nov. 15 at Wilbur May. A few pieces of finished jewlery will also be available. I will be away teaching a workshop at the time of the "main event" and will miss meeting and greeting the Wild Women Artists patrons. I hope to see some of you in Elko at our Duncan LittleCreek show at Cowboy Poetry Festival time.

"Beyond Wild " Guest Artists

The Wild Women Artists are please to announce five wonderful guest artists for this years fall event at The Wilbur D. May Museum, Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno beginning on September 7th with the gallery exhibit and concluding November 16-18 with the three day main event. Please help us welcome these talented individuals.

Carole Sesko
Lake Tahoe-Truckee based artist Carole Sesko has an endless fascination with color, form, and texture. Primarily, she works with acrylic paints and mediums applied onto wood, canvas, metal, and paper. Often she mixes new materials with recycled objects, creating a fresh context for the viewer to interpret and share. Her work is process driven, inspired by adding and subtracting elements, resolving their balance until the artwork achieves a unified flow. Her artwork has been collected throughout North America. Carole teaches mixed media and collage through the Artist in Residence program at Martis Camp, and exhibits frequently in the Truckee / Tahoe / Reno area.
“My life long love of music strongly influences my paintings. Before I turned to visual art, I studied piano and guitar, music theory,
history of western music, and ethnomusicology. My tastes are wide ranging; I respond to anything authentic and innovative. My approach to art is similar to creating a musical composition, working with structure, rhythm, harmony, and vibration.”

Carole will be participating in North Tahoe's open studio ARTour: July 12, 13, 14, and 15; Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10:00 - 5:00 ( Free). Her studio is located at 10326 High Street, downtown Truckee, CA 96161 (behind Burger Me.) 530 587 7750

Beth Cooney
Beth Cooney started creating fused glass art in 2008 after taking a class through Washoe County School District’s Community Education. She fell in love with the process and after taking several more classes, began her own business, Beth Cooney Glass Art in 2009. Beth creates glass pieces in her spare time at her home studio in Sparks. Beth’s full-time job is Executive Director of Marketing for John Ascuaga’s Nugget. Her work is currently featured in the Nevada Museum of Art Museum Shop and was honored with an award at the 2009 National Arts Program Contest.

For more information visit her website at www.cooneyglassart.com

Dick Mackey
Dick Mackey's pottery is made from stoneware clay formulated with local clay and then fired to 2300 degrees in a wood-burning kiln. Some of the pieces are unglazed or partially glazed and get their decoration from the effects of the firing. A wood-burning kiln is unique because the fire and ash coming through the kiln have a direct effect on the pots that are being fired. Because of natural ingredients and the high temperature to which they are fired, the pots are suitable as eating utensils.
Dick has been a part-time studio potter from 1974 to the present producing mostly functional ware as Canyon Creek Pottery. He has designed and built three wood-burning high-fired kilns, one wood-burning raku kiln, several gas fired raku kilns and a high-fire gas kiln. He is devoted to the development of natural clay and glazes from Modoc County in California.
You can contact him at : dickmackey@frontiernet.net

Sally Yost
Most days I am in the field … painting the world in front of me. I work quickly. I have come to realize that there is no “right way” to do a piece. Get the picture going, and at some point it will take on a life of its own. I paint to find a painting. Every time I think I’m hitting my stride, I turn into an excited beginner, fascinated with the materials at hand. I have studied at UW Madison, Calif. College of the Arts, C.S.U.Chico, Feather River College, and workshops with David Goines, Gregory Kondos, Ron Arthaud, & Phyllis Shafer. Painting with oil, gouache, pastel, or pencils, I paint primarily from life ... images from my base in the small community of Taylorsville, California, and around the Great Basin and the west . For more information visit www.sallyyost.com

Glenda Jordan
My botanically inspired pottery combines my loves: clay, great food, gardening and nature. I am a foodie and love to cook. I'm honored when you use my tableware to serve your family and friends. That's how I celebrate life. I handbrush my botanical designs with a batik-based process which permits me to paint matte and glossy glaze colors side by side. I love painting these vibrant colors on my serving pieces. All my stoneware and porcelain pieces have food-safe glazes and can go in your dishwasher or microwave. They are all thrown and slab constructed by me in my high desert Nevada studio.

Glenda will be part of The Palo Alto Clay and Glass Festival July14 &15 visit www.acga.net for more information on the festival. Glenda can be reached at Gjordan825@yahoo.com
