Teresa Jordan

After working as a writer for many years (Riding the White Horse Home; Cowgirls: Women of the American West: and other books), I was asked to teach a year-long course on Writing for Artists. My students suggested that since I was making them write, I learn to draw. I signed up for a course and found I couldn’t stop: it inspired a “mid-life expansion” that earned me a BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Utah and committed me to working in the visual arts.

I suspect that the closest I will get to alchemy in this life is the magic of rendering three-dimensional form in two-dimensional space. Lately I’ve been working with chickens. They remind me of my rural roots on a Wyoming ranch, though my current models live only a few blocks away from me in Salt Lake City. I love their forms, their colors, their gestures. Most of all, I love their senses of humor. Chickens just being chickens: now there’s a subject for a life-long study!
